Bangkok-Pattaya High Speed Rail Link Gets Go Ahead

In just a few short years it will be possible to speed from Bangkok to Pattaya in under half an hour in the comfort of a high speed train.

The Thai government has given the go ahead to the rapid rail link as part of a two trillion baht (US$70 billion) investment to take the national rail network into the 21st century. The Bangkok-Pattaya link is schedule to be the first of the major improvements to the rail infrastructure and is expected to be completed by 2018.

The ‘Pattaya Bullet’ as it has been dubbed in some quarters will contribute significantly to the strong growth of the city. Over the past decade, Pattaya has expanded at a phenomenal rate buoyed by a forward looking city government and a massive influx of investment. What was once a beachside leisure retreat for Bangkok residents has now become a major metropolitan area in its own right. The city is currently looking to become a major industrial, service and tourism hub when the Asian Economic Community integrates its various member states’ economies in 2015.

Pattaya is already served by two fast motorway links to Bangkok; Highway no. 7 and a combination of Highways 3 and 34 already make travel to and from the capital quick and straightforward, but the high speed rail link will increase options and flexibility for both business passengers and tourists.

One major effect of the link is that it will allow Bangkok based executives to live in Pattaya and community to work on a daily basis. This will enable families in particular to utilise all the lifestyle advantages of living in Pattaya.

In addition to enhancing the choice for travellers, the government expects the new rail link to lead to a significant saving in logistic costs. Annual savings of at least 2 per cent are expected once the nationwide network is completed in 2019.

The bill approving the allocation of government funds is expected to pass without delay and includes 1.65 trillion baht for improvements to the rail network. Aside from the Bangkok-Pattaya line the funds will include provision for an equally rapid network linking the capital with Hua Hin, Phitsanulok and Nakhon Ratchasima.

The government plans to put the building of the network out to tender in September and already there has been interests expected from Germany, Japan, China, South Korea and France.

The project will be led by Chula Sookmanob, the director of the Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning Office. He expects to have a government body in place by September charged with overall planning and delivery of the project
